STORIES/REVIEWS

March 23rd, 2008 - Capac Blog – anjoe (http://anjoe-legehuset.blogspot.com/):

"Pan stands for me like one of my youth's wonders music-wise. They just were so good - even when Robert sang in French, which I didn't grasp a word of, and still do not.

"Biked gear-freely several times more than 60 km for in Roskilde (free of charge) experiencing among other things Pan, and when I became the happy owner of a Velo Solex, yes when were driven trip/return (130 km) to the capital, where the Commons park provided much the country's at the time five mostly popular bands. But at my home town, Ringsted, they were playing also more times…

"My Pan record, and not least the single with the song "Right Across My Bed" - where Robert, dressed in leather pants and hat, always kicked out with a leg (from him Johnny Reimar eavesdropped the art of to later farms).Yes these sheep from time to time law to wear out the record player's pick-up. A little the Meg crackling and sweets evoke forward the memories, also about old friends and confessed, but at a time I probably buys Karma-Klaus' CD-publication. He was himself among the time's diligent musicians at the time!

"Robert chose himself life from rather early, which you completely probably fairly well know, Capac, and too few years since then Danmarks Radio brought a couple of programmes about him, where they listened to some pieces of music with him solo, some with Cy and Maia, and of course with Pan. A number of artistic friends made a statement, and also his widow. The reports clearly told about a very sensitive person, who evidence-based his nationality had to pay extra dearly ... Had I finally to mention a piece of music, which pays tribute to Pan overall, yes have it to be: “Lady of The Sand."

"Organ based Danish heavy from 1970, this is one of my fave Danish releases and a great re-release by Little Wing. The original came out in 1000 copies on Sonet and locate the original today it cost a fortune. Pan, a 5-piece band I have tried to locate info but had no luck, was a pretty short-lived band I think. I think they had a pretty good following on the Danish club circuit, there was a good scene at this time in Denmark with Pan, Culpeper's Orchard, Blues Addicts, Young Flowers, Hurdy Gurdy to name a few, plenty of great bands. It's a mystery that Pan only made this album, cause this is a highly impressive piece of heavy progressive rock at its finest, a brilliant mix of heavy and melancholia. It is especially Thomas Puggard-Mullers spiritual guitar work and the great organ/piano performance by Henning Werner that is leading the album and the emotional vocals by French born Robert Lelievre gives the LP a dark and moody feel. For the majority are the LP a quiet adventure where the melancholic side is upfront in combination with a couple of heavy bluesy numbers like Song To France, Many Songs Have Been Lost, To Get Along Alone and Lady Of The Sand. What I dig most with the LP is the experimental direction and the phenomenal production. The Pan album is released on vinyl as far as I know but I think that Little Wing have made a re-issue on CD. For fans of heavy progressive rock are this album a must, for those who are looking for a alternative for their 70s collection should this album be a interesting piece to check out cause the performance that this unit makes here are a pleasure to listen to. Bonus info for collectors are that two of the members Verner and bassist Arne Wurgler are still active musicians Verner is part of Ken Lendings Blues Band and Wurgler have made some records with Benny Holst, folk music I think it is."

Dag Erik Asbjørnsen
"Their collective past gave no indication of the sophisticated sound of Pan. The band's eponymous album is one of those tightly arranged and strictly produced efforts, polished to make Lelievre's songs shine. Most of the tracks blend various styles of rock, folk, jazz and small drops of classical and gospel into a strong and potent brew - it strikes me each time I hear it just how homogenous and forceful it is. Knowing the entertainment business, it will come as no surprise that such an intelligent and emotional album met little commercial success. Lelievre committed suicide in Copenhagen 26th August 1974. An ignorant world lost one of the most talented songwriters of his generation."

"Its a little bit fun how the nordic countries did music. Finland were the home of progressive like Kalevala Elonkurjo and Tasavalan Presidenti. Norway had a lot of rock bands and folk music Junipher Green and Folque are good examples for that and Sweden were a mix of all those countrys and a lot of politics involved in the music. But then we have Denmark the home for heavy blues and rock. It sounds more like it would be from the US/UK or something; bands like Terje Jesper & Joachim or Tömrerclaus, Moses etc. How ever this band are really good, great guitar work splended vocals. Its really hard to say what it sounds like."

"I like it; it's good prog! The first side of the LP is a masterpiece of hard progressive. Feeling, beautiful compositions, marvellous solo guitars. Pan is a great group."

"Used to listen to "universal" bands like Allman Brothers, Sabbath, Zep... I never dreamed that there were many more excellent bands like Pan, outside the US or the UK. And for this, for your hard effort to bring to the www this knowledge of unknown (or less known) bands."

Kosice - (heavyrockspectacular.blogspot.com)
"Great album, an excellent companion to their only studio record. The sound quality is great and it is a bonus to hear previously unknown songs by this fantastic band. They must rate among the top early 70's rock bands from Scandinavia: correction - the best from anywhere! They were excellent musicians and were able to successfully merge several styles into a coherent whole. Rock, blues, gospel, folk - it's all there. They remind me of Traffic in that sense and like Traffic, they also had a terrific lead singer, interesting instrumentation, and intelligent songs. This album contains several longer cuts that never get boring."

"A masterpiece of beautiful and heartfelt rock. Very original in tone - and never matched. Should interest those with leanings towards progressive, psychedelic and melancholic rock. French bandleader Robert Lelievre is a sadly missed genius that never came to the fame he so rightfully deserved."

"A stunning album of deep rock. Especially the singer's pleading ode to his homeland, France. Worth every cent."
