PAN - (1970)
Pan's sole album release is an impressive piece of heavy progressive rock with a touch of blues/hard rock and folk influences at its finest. The tone of the album manages to contrast both the heavy with the melancholy perfectly. Emotional vocals by Robert Lelievre (who also wrote all the songs, except "If") lend the tunes a somewhat dark, moody feel. His distinctive vocals (sung mostly in English, with two songs sung in his native French) range from the angry and frustrated to yearnful and contemplative. Thomas Puggard-Müller's spiritual guitar work plays between both the powerful and the subtle, and is occasionally somewhat reminiscent of David Gilmour. The acoustic guitar-dominated sections provide folk flair and just for variety, some jazzy moments in which a vibraphone is heard, add yet another level to the already impressive variety of styles on display. There are great emotive splashes of organ/piano by Henning Werner, and throbbing proficient bass from Arne Würgler. Michael Puggaard-Müller's skilful yet unobtrusive drumming drives along all ten songs, and it's all over in just less than 40 minutes – the way all great albums should be. The original track listing of the LP features the following songs: "My Time", "If", "Song To France", "They Make Money With The Stars", "Il N’Y Pas Se Longtemps De Ca", "Many Songs Have Been Lost", "Tristesse", "To Get Along Alone", "We Must Do Something Before The End Of The Day", and "Lady Of The Sand". Though, it's not a perfect album… in fact, the album would have benefited with the exclusion of "My Time" and "Many Songs Have Been Lost". Like a lot of early 70's albums from back in the day, both these songs don't seem to fit with the flow of the rest of album, and simply jar with the mood the rest of the songs create. As they are both relatively short tracks, it is easy to overlook this lack of focus from Robert and the band as the other songs more than make up for it. In 1993, Little Wing re-issued "Pan" for on vinyl, limited to only 1000 copies. The reissue contained two bonus tracks, "In A Simple Way" and "Ride Across My Bed", which as it happens were the A-side and B-Side on Pan's only ever 7" single release. In 2005, Karma Music also reissued the album on CD, this time with extensive liner notes (written by Claus Rasmussen in Danish), unpublished photos, and the following seven exclusive bonus tracks added: "In A Simple Way", "Right Across My Bed", "To Get Along Alone (alternate studio take)", "Eternally", "Such A Hard Way", "Tristesse (Mon Ami)" and "Don’t You Know". These last four tracks were recorded in 1971 for a follow-up album recording which never eventuated. The following review of this 3-cd box set was taken from www.gaffa.dk - "Derfra Hvor Vi Stod - Sange Med Merværdi is an impressive documentation of a musical history. The three cd's contains no less than 57 songs from the cradle of Danish progressive music. The artist, painter, writer and hippie Peder Bundgaard has been allowed to compile the soundtrack to his youth and his book Lykkens Pamfil. The songs are all from the period 1966 - 1976, and Peter Bundgaard's music of choice was Danish acid-rock, performed by Young Flowers, Ache, Blue Sun, Old Man & The Sea and all the other acid-heads that flipped out inside a fog of hash-smoke and other chemicals. When the flute played an important part in rock-music and it was perfectly ok to sound like a copy of Cream or Jefferson Airplane. The music on these cd's is innocent in a way that is nowhere to be found in contemporary music, but we are after all talking about the birth of Danish progressive rock - the cradle of it to be exact - where acid-rock had one guitar-sound and bare breasts were something new. This is a chapter of Danish rock-history that is all but forgotten today, but that does not make the music any less interesting to listen to. Derfra Hvor Vi Stod - Sange Med Merværdi is very entertaining, going from very amusing to excellent and to sounding dated. A great big thanks to Peter Bundgård for bringing these stoned & groovy tunes back to light again".
