(BASS)
Jens Elbøl was the bass player in the 2nd incarnation of Pan in August 1970, replacing Arne Würgler who left to form Blast Furnace.
He was born on June 20th, 1952 in Gladsaxe, Copenhagen.
Over the last 40 odd years, Jens has worked with many different bands and soloists across the world, such as: Grin House, Engine, The Baronets, Dårskabens Hus Orkester, Pierre Dørges Padderok, Dr.Dopojam, Henrik Strube & Band, Nimbus Band, Time Out, Sam Mitchell, Bjørn Uglebjerg, 2'nd Line Funkomagic Orchestra, Sam Mitchell & The Blue Vikings, Dana Gillespie Blues Band (GB), Kenn Lending Blues Band, Continental Heat, Sam Mitchell & Blue Steel, The Incidents, My Ship, Midnight Sun, Røde Mor, Jan Toftlund, Mathilde, Vesterbro Ungdomsgård, Connie Skovvart & Bo Schiøler, Peter Westh, Connie Skovvart, Majken Jacoby, Erik Thygesen, Henrik Strube, Rocking Silver, Clausen& Petersen, Luther Allison & Kenn Lending, and Mai Thorup. He has also worked as a session musician on various albums, film projects, and has been part of various musical and cabaret performances. Jens has taught bass at two different music scholls in Copenhagen, Denmark.
At 14, he learnt to play guitar by listening to his big brother Lars, and bands/artists such as The Shadows, Chuck Berry, Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Pretty Things and especially blues musicians such as Lightnin' Hopkins, Muddy Waters and Paul Butterfield.
In the summer of 1968, Jens formed the group Foam with a couple of friends and started playing bass for the first time. Jens' younger brother Thomas joined the band on flute, and within months they were soon playing gigs at local schools and clubs. Foam played blues rock inspired by Cream, Jimi Hendrix and Ten Years After.
The following year, Jens played in the Led Zeppelin and Jeff Beck-inspried Grin House, who had success in Copenhagen and were one of the few rock bands to play in the legendary jazz club Montmartre in St.Regnegade, Copenhagen.
Jens left Grin House to join Pan in August 1970. His first performance with the band was at the Copenhagen Beat Festival that very same month. Circa December 1970 - January 1971, Jens and the band recorded just under twenty minutes of original instrumental music exclusively for Swedish director Stellan Olsson's feature film drama/thriller "Deadline" aka "Sidste Frist", which was a Swedish-Danish film-project released by Omega Film and Nordisk Film. It was the last time they recorded as a group, before they disbanding later that year. From 1972 until 1974, Jens also played in Rainbow Band/Midnight Sun.
As of 2008, Jens is currently playing with the Blues Incidents - www.myspace.com/bluesincidents, and also with René Evald - www.reneevald.com / www.myspace.com/reneevald. To learn more about Jens, visit his C.V. and profile on René Evald's official website at www.reneevald.com/elboelldk.html.
From a recent March 2008 Q & A piece for this site, Jens had this to say about his days in Pan:
"I was very young when I joined Pan in August 1970 and I played with them until the band split up. Pan was the first professional band that I had the opportunity to work with, I was still in high school, and I didn't have that much experience in the music business so I was listening and learning. I really liked Robert's music. Very original tunes with a lot of variation and everybody played great. Thomas played some really great guitar. To this day I still think that the Pan record is a fine album. I believe Pan would have had more success if the record had been released in other countries and if the band had done more concerts outside Denmark."
