NEWS/UPDATES

June 30th, 2008

It's been awhile... here are the new updates:

Firstly, if anyone wishes to subscribe to this fan site to receive update notifications, please visit the newly-added "Subscribe" page. When there is an update on PAN & ROBERT LELIEVRE - MUSIC ARCHIVE I will send you an e-mail notification. This way you never miss an update.

1) Musician Clive Jones from the progressive rock/hard rock UK band Black Widow recently sent me the following message regarding a concert Pan and Black Widow, among others, played at the Copenhagen Beat Festival on August 21st 1970:

"A fan has sent me your site its great to see the poster with all the bands on it I do remember the gig but not Pan I'm sorry to say but maybe we where not there when they played. I remember Affinity because we had fun with the girl singer Linda Hoyle. I remember they also missed the ferry home. Thanks for the reply I personally don't remember anything about the gig I think there were so many bands on it went on for quite a few hours. I spoke to Ray (Dorset; from Mungo Jerry) he said he could remember the gig but for other reasons he said Steve Marriott hung out the hotel windows called them "Wankers". Well there you go its funny what sticks in your mind."

2) Anyone interested in purchasing original copies of the 1970 PAN LP (or various Cy, Maia & Robert releases), please visit the Sound Station vinyl dealer/retailer website at: www.soundstation.dk - I recently picked up a copy of the limited edition Mint copy of the 2004 Pan reissue by Little Wing and it arrived in perfect condition. Sound Station, though somewhat pricey, I highly recommend.

Yet another new update:

1) A few days ago I contacted British musician Brian Godding of Blossom Toes, for any memories he might have to share of Robert's stay with them in London, December 1968. Robert and his wife Michelle, along with Teit Jorgenesen, were in London to meet with music producer and manager, Giorgio Gomelsky. Brian Godding kindly replied the following day with these memories of Robert from Dec. '68:

"I do remember Robert; he was a pretty quiet guy who Giorgio brought around to the house, a bloody fine gtr player in the classical style which really impressed us! He did come down to a blossies gig at the middle earth club (London's Fillmore East of the period!) and jammed with the band on electric gtr, which he was not too familiar with :-) but had a great time (I think?) That's about it really, we were pretty busy then and touring so, as far as I remember, we didn't meet again. I'm sad to read he died in 1973; he struck me a one of the good guys."

- Thanks Brian for helping out with this inquiry – I know it's a very long time ago and therefore appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to do so. I was also hoping on adding something about Robert from former 10CC singer/guitarist and legendary songwriter, Graham Gouldman, but being such a long time ago, he apparently couldn't recall anything of use. Thanks anyway, Graham.

2) All downloadable mp3s have been taken off this site due to the fact that there is currently a proposed CD reissuing project being taken into consideration regarding Robert Lelievre's music. Further information regarding this project is unavailable at the moment, though as it goes along I will try to add something here.

3) Eight more Teit Jørgensen photos of both Robert and Pan have been added to the site. Teit kindly sent me yet another eight excellent photos from his personal archive over the last couple days. All eight pics have now been added to the "Robert Gallery" and Pan Gallery" pages. Thank you very much Teit for yet another amazing bunch of photos of Robert and Pan.

The photo descriptions for these four new pics (and where they can be seen) are as follows:

ROBERT GALLERY

I, II, II) A portrait of Robert circa the Alliance album sessions, Spring 1968 - three new pics.

IV) Robert and Giorgio Gomelsky listening to Robert's recordings for the unreleased 1969 Polydor/Marmalade LP, The Hare.

V) Robert rehearsing with members of The Blossom Toes in London, December 1968.

VI) Robert during a Pan practice session from Teit's unreleased video of Pan, shot for Danish Film School, 1970.

PAN GALLERY

I) Pan with Niels Skousen recording in DR (Danish Broadcast Corporation), 1970.

II) Pan practice session from Teit's unreleased video of Pan, shot for Danish Film School, 1970.

- ALL EIGHT NEW PHOTOS (ALONG WITH THE PREVIOUS TEN) ARE NOW FEATURED IN THE GALLERY SECTIONS -

4) A few days ago, I added a Teit Jørgensen photograph of Robert Lelievre with wife Michelle and son Renaud to the new "Robert Gallery". The details of this photograph I added were incorrect. The photo is of Robert, Michelle, and their daughter Anne - not their son Renaud, as previously assumed. My apologies to Michelle and Anne for this mistake. The details of this particular photo now been corrected. It also slipped my mind the fact that Robert also had a daughter, as well as a son. I have corrected these facts on the "Robert Biography" page.

April 26th, 2008

Here are the new updates for April 26th, 2008:

1) Pan and Robert Lelievre photographer Teit Jørgensen has kindly sent me another six (!) photos from his personal archive (that now makes nine all up) that feature Pan and Robert Lelievre. I have added these six new photographs by Teit Jorgensen (and the previouis four he sent me), to the "Pan Gallery" page, and the new "Robert Gallery" page. Thanks again Teit for kindly sending me all these excellent pics and allowing their use on this fan site - it is very much appreciated..

The photo descriptions for these six new pics are as follows:

I) Robert circa the Alliance album sessions, Spring 1968.

II) Robert again, circa the Alliance album sessions, Spring 1968.

III) Robert in London recording the unreleased Polydor album The Hare at Advision studio, December 1968.

IV) Pan with Niels Skousen, 1970.

V) Pan with Niels Skousen, 1970.

VI) Pan practice session from Teit's unreleased video of Pan, shot for Danish Film School, 1970.

- and the previous four Teit sent a couple days ago:

I) Robert with wife Michelle and daughter Anne, Autumn 1968.

II) Robert with Maia Aarskov, Iain Campbell, and the Englishman of the group (possibly Paul Secon?) 'Full Limit', 1968.

III) Robert and Iain Campbell, circa the Robert and Iain "Alliance" recording sessions, March 1968.

IV) Robert with Giorgio Gomelsky in London recording the unreleased Polydor album The Hare at Advision studio, December 1968.

- ALL TEN PHOTOS ARE NOW FEATURED IN THE GALLERY SECTIONS -

2) Added Robert Lelievre's 1968 Alliance album with Iain Campbell to the "Downloads" page, and a sample MP3 to the "Discography - II" page. The complete lyrics to Robert's songs featured on the Alliance LP have now been added to the new "Lyrics – 2" page. Thank you to Jeanette and Frederic for their brilliant work on these titles - once again, it is very much appreciated. Added Cy, Maia & Robert's On The Scene and Out of Our Times albums to the "Downloads" page, and two sample MP3s to the "Discography - II" page. Also added a new sample MP3 from the Pan On The Air CD to the Discography page. Lastly, I've added another album that Robert plays guitar on to the "Discography - 2" page - Alex Campbell  - At The Tivoli Gardens.

3) In a previous update on the site, I stated that the Iain Campbell featured on the Alliance LP with Robert, was indeed legendary Scottish folk musician. Iain Campbell (Ali Campbell's father)... I was wrong. The Iain Campbell featured on Alliance was just someone Robert met in Copenhagen at the time, not the famous folk musician. The reason I assumed they were the same person, is because both are Scottish Folk musicians with very similar names, and Ian Campbell apparently released at least two albums in the 70's under the alias of Iain Campbell.... Very confusing, but it has now been cleared up thanks to Teit Jørgensen.

April 11th, 2008

Ok, here are the new updates for April 11, 2008.

1) In the last update I added to the site, Robert Lelievre's old friend and one-time Pan photographer Teit Jørgensen's memories of their December 1968 trip to London, which resulted in Robert singing with Polydor - then later Giorgio Gomelsky's Marmalade label. Yesterday, Teit kindly sent me a rare photo he shot during a January 1969 Polydor or Marmalade session, which features Robert and producer Gomelsky. Today, Teit sent me yet another amazing rare photo he took of Robert from this era, circa the Robert and Iain "Alliance" recording sessions of March 1968. Thank you very much Teit for kindly sending me these amazing pics, it is very much appreciated.

April 1st, 2008

Here are the new updates for April 1st, 2008. Sorry to those who have been wanting to download the Robert & Iain - Alliance LP, this album will now be available on April 3rd, 2008 (I promise!). My apologies also to Jeanette and Frederic.

 1) One-time Pan photgrapher and associate Teit Jørgensen contacted yesterday with the following memories of Robert Lelievre and their trip to London to meet with The Beatles at the offices of The Beatles's Apple Corps, which were at located 3 Savile Row. Thanks to Claus Rasmussen for assisting in clarifing my intial Danish to English translation. My thanks also to Teit of course for contacting me with this interesting story/memory.

March 29th, 2008 - Teit Jørgensen:

"Robert, his wife Michelle and I went to London in the beginning of December 1968, and met both Giorgio Gomelsky and a producer during our month at Apple. We lived at first in a rented basement flat, but moved out later with a band a piece out of Kings Road. They were friends with Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger.  Robert got a contract draft from Apple as thick as a novel. As far as I understood, Robert was to commit himself for 5 years to the label without guarantee that Apple would ever actually publish him, but on the other hand they could use his tunes for other use, if they wanted to it. Implicitly, if The Beatles wanted to use of one of Robert's songs in some other context, they could if they wanted to.

"As a curiosity, we spent the night before Christmas Eve at Apple in Savile Row, where in the afternoon an orphanage were invited to visit, with John Lennon and Yoko Ono dressing up as Christmas fairies and distributing presents. Ringo Starr just sat and looked. In the evening there was a party with a little record player on top of the open fireplace, and it played "The White Album" (aka "The Beatles") the whole evening. There also stood (on top the record player) a jazz record, a George Harrison record, a singer who had a great hit, and the first 4 Apples publications; though they weren't played. I talked with John Lennon (while Yoko Ono quietly held his hand) about some of the experimental films they had made and that I had seen.

"Christmas Eve we spent at a pub on Kings Road. On Boxing Day, we spent with Giorgio Gomelsky and The Monkees' producer Chip Douglas in private. Robert chose consequently to record with Gomelsky who worked for Polydor at that time, and the opinion was that Polydor had to publish the record. I was present in the studio for a single session, but went back home to Film school by New Year, which I had been absent from the whole December. Therefore, I did not participate in the recordings of Lelievre in January 69. The reason therefore that Robert's recordings for Polydor appear on the Marmalade label consequently is due to the fact that Gomelsky was sacked by Polydor and started his own label."

2) Just wanting to say thank you Capac from www.capac.dk/wordpress for mentioning this Pan and Robert Lelievre fan site on his excellent blog – much appreciated, Capac! Also on his blog, were the following comments below posted by Capac, and anjoe (excerpted a bit in anjoe's case) regarding Pan and Robert Lelievre, now translated from Danish into English (somewhat poorly by yours truly , therefore please excuse any mistakes).

- I also must thank famed comic artist and writer Stephen R. Bissette - http://srbissette.com/ - for also mentioning this fan site and including a link to it on his MYRANT blog - http://srbissette.blogspot.com/ - in a March 18th, 2008 blog entry titled:

"Compiling Taboo Tidbits Plus: Defying Bush, Heavy Metal 2009, Grimes and Pan"

Many thanks Steve! - the Rick Grimes fan site will be published on the 17th of April by the way, sorry about the delay.

Here are the comments from Capac, Anjoe, and Klaus; as well as Steve's own words regarding this site:

March 18th,  2008 - Stephen R. Bissette Blog – Stephen R. Bissette:

"I should also let you know that Taboo and Rick Grimes fan Ryan H. created this tasty non-profit fan site up for Pan & Robert Lelievre. As a fellow fan of all things Danish, I quite enjoyed what I found there, and thought you might, too. I'll quote Ryan's brief, "Pan were a Danish prog/psych/blues rock band from the early 70's which featured the following musicians: Robert Lelievre (vocals, guitars), Thomas Puggaard-Müller (lead guitar), Henning Verner (piano, organ, vibes), Arne Würgler (bass, cello), Michael Puggaard-Müller (drums), and in the group's second incarnation: Jens Elbøl (bass) Torben Enghoff (sax, flute) and Nils Tuxen (steel guitar)."

Check it out, and enjoy the tunes."

March 23rd, 2008 - Capac Blog – anjoe (http://anjoe-legehuset.blogspot.com/)

"Pan stands for me like one of my youth's wonders music-wise. They just were so good - even when Robert sang in French, which I didn't grasp a word of, and still do not.

"Biked gear-freely several times more than 60 km into Roskilde (free of charge) experiencing among other things Pan, and when I became the happy owner of a VéloSoleX, a driven trip/return (130 km) to the capital, where the Commons park provided the country's five mostly popular bands at the time. But at my home town, Ringsted, they were playing also more times…

"My Pan record, and not least the single with the song "Right Across My Bed" - where Robert, dressed in leather pants and hat, always kicked out with a leg (from him Johnny Reimar eavesdropped the art of to later farms). From time to time to wore out the record player's pick-up. He was himself among the time's most diligent musicians!

"A few years since Robert's passing, Denmark Radio brought a couple of programmes about him, where they listened to some pieces of music with him solo, some with Cy and Maia, and of course with Pan. A number of artistic friends made a statement, and also his widow. The reports clearly told about a very sensitive person, who (based on evidence regarding Robert's feelings about a loss of nationality) had to pay extra dearly ... Had I finally to mention a piece of music, which pays tribute to Pan overall, it has to be: “Lady of The Sand."

March 24th, 2008 - Capac Blog – Klaus:

"Funnily, I haven't thought of Cy, Maia, and Robert for years,  though among other things I remember them from a concert in Odense where they outdistanced the local heating to put it mildly..."

March 24th, 2008 - Capac Blog – Capac:

"I have done research a little on them, since I wrote the contribution. And have found an obscure Peter Assenfelt-record with a gathering of different Danish numbers, among other things one with Cy, Maia, and Robert . It reallly is a pity that they aren't commonly accessible. I remember their vocal-work as something special."

3) Added a new Q & A piece with Pan's 2nd bassist Jens Elbøl to the 'Q & A - 2008 - 5 page'. Many thanks to Jens for kindly answering my list of questions - it is much appreciated.

4) Added a couple Danish rock compilations featuring Pan to the "Pan Discography" page.

March 8th, 2008

Here are the following updates I have made to this site since the last update, which was February 28th, 2008. By the way, MP3 samples featurted on this site seem to be not working at the moment. This is eSnips.com's error, not mine. Sorry to those who have been wishing to listen to Pan or Robert Lelievre samples. Hopefully this problem should be fixed within the next week or two. Ok, here are the new site updates:

1) Added an English translated Pan interview circa 1970 for Danish music magazine "Rok". Pan's Arne Würgler and Thomas Puggaard-Müller were interviewed by Erik Kramshøj for Rok magazine. This article can be found on the "Article - 4" page. Thank you to Claus Rasmussen for the original Danish article, and thanks also to Raj from GAF for translating it into English.

2) Added an English translated Pan article from December 1969 for Danish newspaper "Blindebuk". Pan's Robert Lelievre and Arne Würgler took part in a six-song review piece for the newspaper, giving their thoughts on the various releases of that year, including: Janis Joplin's "Kozmic Blues",  Muddy Waters' "I Am The Blues", Burnin Red Ivanhoe's "Brilleslangen", The Byrds' "Ballad Of Easy Rider", Pentangle's "Light Flight", and The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter". This article can be found on the "Article - 5" page.Thank you to Claus Rasmussen for the original Danish article, and thanks also to Raj from GAF for translating it into English.

3) Updated Arne, Thomas, Michael, and Henning's profile pages with further information regarding their music careers.

4) Robert Lelievre's 1968 "Alliance" LP - recorded with Iain Campbell - will be added to this site in a week's time, possible along with various Cy, Maia and Robert MP3 samples. All known French-sung Robert Lelievre lyrics will also be added soon, in both French and English.

5) Added a higher-quality scan of Pan's "In A Simple Way/Right Across My Bed" single to the "Discography" page.

Lastly, if anyone has any information regarding a Scottish Folk musician from the late 60's named Iain Campbell, please let me know. In March 1968, Robert Lelievre recorded an LP called "Alliance" with Iain for the Metronome label in Copenhagen, Denmark. Finding information regarding Iain is proving somewhat difficult, though I have read on various diifferent sites now that Iain Campbell is apparently the famous Scottish folk musician Ian Campbell. Apparently, some time in his career, Ian added the extra 'i' to his first name in order to distinguish one or two solo LP releases from his "Ian Campbell Folk Group" releases; such as 1969's "Country N Soul" LP. Legendary folk musician Ian Campbell by the way is former UB40 frontman Ali Campbell's father...

February 28th, 2008

1) Added an English translated Danish newspaper featuring Robert Lelievre to the "Artilce 3" page. Thanks to Claus Rasmussen for the article, and Raj from GAF for the translation. More English translations of other Pan articles/interviews will  be added soon.

2) Updated Michael Puggaard-Müller's profile page with more information. Thanks Michaal for your extensive music CV. I will elaborate on Michael's page with more information soon. If anyone wishes for a copy of Michael's impressive CV, send me an email.

3) A new Q & A piece, this time with Pan drummer Michael Puggaard-Müller, has now been added to the 'Q & A - 2008 - 4' page. Many thanks to Michael for kindly answering my list of questions - it is much appreciated.

4) Michael's brother Thomas also sent me another pic of Pan, this time from a live show in Fælledparken, Copenhagen, Denmark in 1970 - thanks Thomas. This photo will be added later in the week, along with more photos of Pan, and Pan-related bands such as: Suvivors, Delta Blues Band, and Cy, Maia & Robert.

5) Pan's organist Henning Verner also sent an interesting pic today, which you can view below. It seems a Japanese band/group also named Pan were "inspired" in 2005 to use Pan's 1970 album cover art for their own CD single cover artwork. This is only an assumption on my part, but the pics below speak for themselves I would think...

February 16th, 2008

For the last week or so now, I have been unable to update this site due to website host provider problems. My apologies to those people who have been wanting to view the site, particularly Thomas Puggaard-Müller (for not adding his Q & A piece sooner), and Claus Rasmussen. Among the new updates I have made, include:

1) Added a new Q & A piece with Pan lead guitarist Thomas Puggaard-Müller to the 'Q & A - 2008 - 3 page'. Many thanks to Thomas for kindly answering my list of questions - it is much appreciated. Thomas also sent me a live show newspaper clipping which I have added to the "Articles 2" page.

2) Added a Robert Lelievre audio interview circa 1971. This audio interview has also been translated to English. Thanks to Claus for the interview and Jeannette for the translation. Jeanette also translated Robert's lyrics to the Pan songs: "Il n'y a pas si longtemps de ça" and "Tristesse (mon ami)", which can be found on the "Lyrics" page.

3) Added a youtube.com-hosted video clip excerpt from the 1971 Swedish/Danish film "Deadline" to the "Deadline" page. Pan both appeared in and recorded music for this film.

4) Added a new page for 2nd Pan bassist Jens Elbøl's career profile.

5) Added MP3 samples to the "Discography" and Discography - 2" pages.

February 7th, 2008

Hello and welcome to the Pan & Robert Lelievre fan site. This fan site will be an ongoing thing I hope, with even more information being added if and when possible. If anyone has any Pan or Robert Lelievre information, pics, or stories that they would like to share, then please send me an email to let me know, thanks. This is my 2nd fan site dedicated to music, my first being the Tymon Dogg (see The Clash) site at www.tymondogg.net/ - I hope you enjoy this Pan & Robert Lelievre site.

1) Just added to the site, a new Q & A piece with Pan's organist Henning Verner. This Q & A piece can be found on the 'Q & A - 2008 - 2' page. Many thanks to Henning for taking the time out of his busy schedule to answer these questions - I very much appreciate it and hope Survivors gig the other night went well. I'm also hoping to add two more Q & A pieces, this time with Pan's lead guitarist Thomas Puggaard-Müller, and his brother drummer Michael Puggaard-Müller. Also, several quailty Pan photos have now been added to the 'Photo Gallery' section. A big thanks to Claus Rasmussen, Arne Würgler, Thomas Puggaard-Müller, Michael Puggaard-Müller, Henning Verner, and Jens Ebøl Nielsen for their generosity and support towards this fan site.

2) I have just fixed/edited a few sections on the site, particularly the Pan and Robert Lelievre Biography sections. Also, in a couple weeks time I hope to add some Pan samples and Robert Lelievre-related downloads to the site. I hope to add Robert's "Dis-Toi-Bien" single, along with various Cy, Maia & Robert tracks for download. Robert's "Alliance" LP will also be added in about a month's time, along with his "Dis-Toi-Bien" single b-side "J'ai Vu Ton Visage". The Pan songs will be samples only as Karma Music is currently selling the CD with bonus tracks and I don't want to infringe on their copyright laws, though as far as I know, the Robert Lelievre-related songs will be downloadable, unless prohibited.

3) Pan bassist Arne Würgler is currently touring Cuba until the end of February. Prior to this, Arne kindly answered a list of questions I sent him with regards to Pan and Robert Lelievre. This Q & A piece can be found on the 'Q & A - 2008 - 1' page. Many thanks to Arne for taking the time out of his busy schedule to answer these questions - I very much appreciate it and hope the Cuba tour is a great success. I'm also hoping to add other Q & A pieces with the other members from Pan some day soon if and when possible.

4) Three nights ago in Denmark at 10pm, three of Pan's musicians (Thomas & Michael Puggaard-Müller, and Henning Verner) played together with Jens Rugsted and Roy Richards as the 'Survivors'. Great to see most of Pan playing together again, I hope the gig went well for them and they continue playing music together. The gig flyer is featured below, courtesy of Claus Rasmussen.
